Ruth Oliphant, Al Azhar. Enamelled and carved glass, 24 x 60 x 9cm
|
Ruth Oliphant explores the interrelationships between place, perception and visual memory. She is intrigued by the way that impressions of a destination are filtered through memory and experience, with her most recent work inspired by an extraordinary visit to the city of Cairo. Creating individual portraits of the city streets, Ruth removes all human activity, only leaving Islamic architecture, patterns, history and centuries of culture. Her glass sculptures create a three-dimensional space inviting us into the street. Ruth received the Ranamok People’s Choice Award in 2008, the Embassy of Spain Award in 2008 and the Vicki Torr Memorial Prize in 2009.
