Sadie Chandler: Spray Paintings - Art Collector

Sadie Chandler, Cloudscape, 2013. Acrylic and enamel on canvas, 200 x 150cm. Courtesy: the artist and Charles Nodrum Gallery, Richmond

Pattern and repetition have always been used in Sadie Chandler’s work, usually with images of objects spaced evenly or repeated on a flat background. These new works are about mark making and the qualities of the material. Spray enamel comes out fast and uncontrollably— it all happens in a few minutes. After a slowly prepared under painting of flat acrylic, the squirt of glossy enamel has its own rules. The paint is anarchic, glossy, and brushless, unlike anything that could be made with traditional paint and brush.
