This is the first Sydney commercial gallery show for Sydney-based artist Sarah Contos. She works across sculpture, collage and installation to investigate themes of primitivism, exoticism and eroticism within the domestic and everyday. Her influences are drawn from cultural anthropology, fetishism ideologies, folk art and arts and craft methodologies from selected tribal communities. Contos is a past recipient of the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship for Sculpture and has participated in artist residency programs at the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Beijing, the Dogtroep in the Netherlands and at Artspace in Sydney. Concurrent to this solo show she is also exhibiting in Future Primitive at Heide Museum of Modern Art, a group show curated by Linda Michael. | ||||
