Sarah Dolby: Spindle - Art Collector

With her distinctive Gothic sensibility and animators hyperrealism, Dunedin-based artist Sarah Dolby explores fairytale archetypes in Spindle. Dolby captures the essence of the roles within the genre. Using the liminal space afforded by these fables, she explores themes of morality, beauty, fear, death, power, friendship and magic. Dolby’s characters are immediately dazzling in their power and beauty, but on closer inspection reveal hands rubbed raw, flushed complexions and above all else, unnerving expressions. Set against stark yet luminous backgrounds, the focus of each work is firmly on the character and the depth and complexity of emotions barely contained behind their gaze.
