Simon Gende: Gilas bilong lukim papa graun (Mirror to the world) - Art Collector

Encouraged by Papua New Guinea’s most renowned artist of the modern era, Mathias Kauage O.B.E., to become “a famous painter like myself”, Simon Gende channels the creative flair and expression of his illustrious predecessor. In so doing, Gende creates works which uniquely absorb, process and reflect world events from a Tok Pisin point-of-view.

Isolation from the outside world is an advantage to Gende rather than a hindrance. His enthrallment with local and international news compels him to explore topics as wide-ranging as: Australia’s refugee policies; a visit by Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai to London; Port Moresby’s forthcoming APEC meeting; and disposal of Osama Bin Laden’s corpse at sea by USA defence personnel.
