Simon Kaan: New Work - Art Collector

Simon Kaan, Untitled, 2015. Oil on board, carved ink on cedar, 92 x 152cm. Courtesy: the artist and Sanderson Contemporary Art.

Simon Kaan describes his work as “biological landscapes”, animated vistas that piece together a sense of belonging and explore a multi-dimensional sense of self. Kaan has a Maori (Ngai Tahu) mother and migrant Chinese grandparents on his father’s side. His whakapapa and strong sense of his Maori heritage has grounded him in the cultural and physical local landscape, the subject of many of his works. Equally his Chinese heritage has influence and is as interwoven within his work as it is within him as an individual.
