7 November 2011 | Sophie Cape has won the people’s choice prize in the 2011 Portia Geach Memorial Award for her painting of Captain Paul Watson.

The portrait, which aims to depict the environmental activist and Sea Shepherd Conservation Society founder in a realistic light, has been described as ”bold and audacious” by art critic John McDonald.

Cape has conceded that the work is “not pretty”. Rather, she describes it as “raw and visceral and violent. I painted it with blood, bone and fat. My intention was not to simply portray the image of Paul that we all know from the media, but to try to expose the reality of the world he inhabits.”
