Steaphan Paton: Wallung Githa Unsettled - Art Collector

Cameron Cope & Steaphan Paton, Bagwan (Concealed), 2015, photographic print. Courtesy: the artist and Anna Pappas Gallery, Melbourne

Steaphan Paton’s first exhibition at Anna Pappas Gallery is a collaborative and individual exploration of Aboriginal massacre sites, national mythology and personal ancestries. Drawing on a well-known frontier myth, Paton and photographer Cameron Cope reconstruct history, explore themes of cultural conflict and highlight the brutality hiding behind the European euphemism of 'settlement'.
This is not a re-telling of history; it is non-didactic, asking us to question what we think we know, and how much of what we accept as truth, might actually be myth. By exploring Gunai perspectives, common frontier characters, accepted history and the Australian national story are challenged.
