|This May sees the launch of a new group of works, an old group of works, and a new publication for the legendary artist, Sydney Ball, who turns 83 this year. The focus of the book and accompanying exhibition, titled Sydney Ball: Infinex IV, Chromix Lumina and Modular, are Ball’s distinctive shaped works|
dating from 1967 and now, the Modulars and the Infinex.
The Modular series – originally shown at Bonython Art Gallery in 1969, were a triumph of their time, named by the leading critic of the day, Elywn Lynn as “the best show in several years”. Works from this tight-held series can be found in state and university collections throughout the country. Sullivan+Strumpf have bought together three of these original Modulars as well as never-before-seen studies for the entire series, and the artist’s sketchbooks from the period which outlines the original installation plans for the famed show.
The exhibition and book also highlight Ball’s more recent encounters with shaped work - the sharp new Chromix Lumina, the forth instalment in his Infinex series. These glossy immaculate works created in automotive enamel on aluminium have been made in collaboration with Urban Art Projects – and break new ground for this ever-evolving artist. The book and exhibition, both titled Sydney Ball: Modular and Infinex 1967 – now and will be launched on 7 May at Sullivan+Strumpf. Authored by the revered art historian and curator, Terence Maloon, and with contributions from Penelope Seidler, AM, this handsome publication is the final volume in a series on this important figure in the history of Australian art.
