Ted May: Pentimenti - Art Collector

Ted May, The Expulsion, 2013. Oil on canvas, 213 x 198cm. Courtesy: the artist and Gallerysmith, Melbourne

Artists over the centuries have utilised real and imagined imagery to make visible what is only seen in the mind’s eye. Ted May’s paintings develop in this way - organic forms evolve as thoughts shift, often the result of the artist painting and repainting on the same canvas. May often depicts images recently seen with experiences recalled from more than 50 years ago. May’s work, The Expulsion (pictured) refers to an Italian Renaissance painting by Masaccio, portraying Eve covering herself as she is expelled from the Garden of Eden. Simultaneously, it recounts Sidney Nolan's animalistic representations of Mrs. Fraser
