TextaQueen: Coconut Legacy - Art Collector

TextaQueen, Reunion, 2014. Fibre-tipped marker and acrylic paint pen on Stonehenge cotton paper, 97.5 x 126.5cm. Courtesy: the artist and Sullivan+Strumpf.

Using the humble felt-tip pen or ‘Texta’, the art of TextaQueen is both playful and political. Thematically, the artist interrogates the complex politics of sexuality, race and gender alongside ideas of self-image and collective expressions of identity based on shared experience.

For TextaQueen’s fifth solo show at Sullivan+Strumpf, the artist will present a series of works that trace a fictional life narrative from birth to death.
Coconut Legacy draws out a diverse yet interwoven narrative that acts as a homage to the artist’s ancestors and transports the viewer into a faraway world where the symbols of coconuts and palm trees, tigers and chicos, metaphorically convey our collective life cycle.
