The pop-up Melbourne exhibition, open to the public from 11am-5pm this Saturday and Sunday, is a prelude to Richard Lewer’s and Tim Silver's debut solo shows at Sullivan+Strumpf in March this year.
The multidisciplinary practice of Sydney-based artist Tim Silver is inextricably hinged on time, both conceptually and materially. Working across sculpture, photography and installation, Silver explores the interface between time and decay, particularly in relation to the human body and the natural world.
In this exhibition, Silver creates more permanent forms. A series of burnt tree stumps are rendered in steel and bronze, quietly monumental in their presence. These sit alongside a video and sculptural installation Untitled (blow up). Untitled (blow up) consists of the classical form of the bust cast from reconstituted huon pine dust. The expression on the face is contorted, tense, as if in anticipation. The coarseness of its texture reveals its materiality. The object sits on a plinth beside the video work of the same name. The video captures the brief moment of time, during which the bust has been subjected to an internal implosion. Untiled (blow up) plays out a brief few seconds of the objects demise in slow motion, allowing us to revel in and relive this moment against a seemingly extended five minute duration of the footage.
