Timothy Cook is a leading artist on Melville Island, Tiwi Islands, and was the recipient of the 29th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award 2012. In recent years Cook has gained acclaim for his free and gestural style. His art is personal and holds a deep connection with culture and country. Cook’s works characteristically feature bold lines (marlipinyini) and dots (pwanga). He has been focussing on the kulama design, which represents the coming-of-age ceremony and initiation into male adult life.
