23 July 2012 | Natasha Bieniek has won the $50,000 Metro Art Prize for emerging artists.

She was selected for a portrait measuring only 10 by 15 centimetres. “In contemporary culture so much of the imagery we see is miniaturised, through iPhones and tablets,” says the 28-year-old. “I felt it was time to bring this ancient art [of portraiture] into a modern context.”

The judging panel included painter Ben Quilty, last year’s Metro Art Prize winner Vincent Fantauzzo and former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett.

The award exhibition continues at the Metro Gallery in Melbourne until 28 July 2012.
