The introduction of acrylic paints to Australia's desert regions in the 1970s gave artists access to an infinite palette, which fuelled increasing experiments with colour and compositional abstraction.

Tjarlirli Art represents the artist of Tjukurla in the Ngannyatjarra lands of Western Australia. The artistic rationale at Tjarlirli Art is, as it always has been, inspired by timeless narratives of ancestor spirits and the human condition. Tjarlirli artists’ works are performative by nature, where each colour, texture and image acts out a part of the larger narrative. This is true of all the artists in this group exhibition, from senior artists Nyarapayi Giles and Katjarra Butler through to new emerging painters Valmayi Nampitjinpa and Bonnie Connelly.
