Tom Alberts: Collage Observation - Art Collector

Tom Alberts, St Kilda Beach and Studio 2017. Oil on Belgian linen. 91.5 x 132cm. Courtesy of The Artist and Charles Nodrum Gallery, Melbourne.

Tom Alberts’ new body of paintings continue his exploration of his process of ‘observational collage’, whereby he paints a section of canvas, covers it and tries to forget about it, continues to paint other areas of the canvas, and finally, removing all the covered sections, he reveals an effectively unplanned and spontaneous composition. These fusions of landscape, still life and portraiture are all painted from life.

“I go from my immediate surroundings - to screens - to depictions in books - to imagined fictional worlds - to movies - to a different country on a plane - to a phone conversation with someone in another part of the world - to something on the table in front of me. My process seems a way to reflect this experience.” Tom Alberts
