28 September 2010 | Townsville-based artist Gabriel Smith has won the main prize in the Queensland Regional Art Awards for her mixed media work Urban Footprints.

Smith’s work depicts Castle Hill, a large rock structure in the centre of Townsville.

“My work is about people’s experience and the meaning of the land,” says Smith. “I love to explore past and present experiences that strongly reflect a sense of place.”

Also recognised was painter Karla Marchesi who won the Young Artist Prize.

The award exhibition will tour regionally in 2011.
