23 October 2012 | United States artist Peter Lundberg's barrel roll has won Sculpture by the Sea 2012, and was awarded the $70,000 Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize. The Balnaves Foundation Sculpture Prize has been the event's major prize since 2009, with the winning sculpture gifted to the Royal Botanical Gardens.

The judging panel for the 2012 prize consisted of John Gow, director of Connels Bay Sculpture Park in New Zealand; Terence Maloon, former senior curator of special exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales; and Rosemary Foot, a collector. Maloon said that
barrel roll was a unanimous selection, impressing the panel with its ‘majestic scale, its visceral energy and impact in the natural setting.’
