|11 April 2011 | Vincent Fantauzzo has won the 2011 Packing Room Prize at this year’s Archibald Prize.The Melbourne artist is a regular on the Archibald shortlist having won the People’s Choice Award consecutively in 2008 and 2009 for his portrayal of the late actor Heath Ledger and Indigenous child actor Brandon Walters.|
Fantuzzo’s winning portrait shows celebrity chef Matt Moran holding a craving knife and sitting amongst meat carcasses.
Fantauzzo said he is a good friend of Moran. He experimented with several poses before deciding on this one.
“Some of them looked a bit sinister with the knife and meat,” said Fantauzzo
The packing room prize allows gallery staff to vote for their favourite portrait. Last year the prize was won by Sydney artist Nafisa Naomi who painted Rock historian Glenn A Baker.
Fantauzzo has been named a finalist in the Archibald Prize as well, whose winner will be announced Friday 15 April.
