Webb's extends alliance to Kaliman + Reid - Art Collector

17 January 2011 | Auckland auction house Webb’s is extending the trans-Tasman alliance it formed last year with Sydney-based dealer Michael Reid.

The alliance now stretches to Reid’s
new venture Kaliman & Reid, a secondary market dealership currently being formed Vasili Kaliman.

It’s not the first time the two Sydney dealers have worked together – they are the key players behind Art Month Sydney – but it is rare to see a partnership between an auction house and a secondary market dealer, normally considered rivals.

Kaliman & Reid will represent Webb’s art auctions in Australia. The dealers will also work closely with Webb’s to place contemporary New Zealand art in the Australian market through private treaty sale.

Webb’s also hopes Australian collectors will be encouraged to consign works in its auctions through its relatively modest commission and the absence of a resale royalty in New Zealand.

Vasili Kaliman will also be working with Sophie Coupland from Webb’s to provide Auckland Art Gallery with an insurance valuation for works valued over $100,000.

Kaliman & Reid will open in March 2011.
