|In July last year, Yanni Pounartzis relocated to Square One Studios Erskineville where he continued to experiment with abstraction.|
Drawing influence from abstract expressionism, Pounartzis recalls a range of iconic abstractionists ranging from Mark Rothko to Barnett Newman.
But Pounartzis’ paintings are still instantly recognizable with the continuation of vibrant, oscillating colours. The receding planes and true-to-life shading continue to defy the two dimensional surface.
Pounartzis also continues to reject masking tape and meticulously paints each line freehand. The paintings are playful and profound, and deliberately flirt with the kitsch, whilst drawing connotations to depth in their sumptuous satiny finish.
